What's in a name?

When we set up the company we thought long and hard about what we should call ourselves. All discussions fell back to Plymouth’s (and Janners’) connection with the sea.

But - you’ve probably no idea what ‘Guzzland’ is. Right?

Here goes, then.  

I’ll let you in on a little ‘secret’ not known to many outside the UK military or ‘dockyardies’…

British sailors and servicemen (and latterly servicewomen) nicknamed Devonport Dockyard 'The Yard'. It has been in loyal service since 1693 – over 300 years!

Crews leaving The Yard to sail the seven seas picked up nicknames and phrases from many foreign lands. One such nickname was ‘Guzz’ – an old Indian (Hindi) unit of measurement of 36 inches, or a yard. So, over the years, ‘Guzz’ became an affectionate name for the dockyard and Plymouth.

So, Guzz and land sounded a great combination, and there it is, Guzzland was formed.
